About Us

PEO's Black Eye Pea Workshop on this drought and heat tolerant crop.

LOOK. GROW. HEAL.

We are Planet Earth Observatory (PEO) an ever-expanding grassroots, volunteer organisation with 501 (c)(3) status that encourages experiential learning for a healthy planet. We are students, teachers, urban gardeners, scientists, artists and makers who individually and collectively  take our cues from nature to grow healthy food, heal the planet and heal ourselves.

We also take a wider view, advocating for regenerative and just agricultural principles, including support for small scale farmers who grow a diverse variety of crops, increase water use efficiency, reduce food losses and ensure sustainable management of our ecosystems.

Our Theory of Change (see chart, below)  captures the roots of PEO while also drawing a clear logical pathway between where we are and where we want to go

  • We partner with a range of stakeholders, including gardeners, students, scientists, artists, families, and makers.
  • Art is important to us because it’s a way to engage with the wider community, especially on issues around soil health and climate, which may otherwise seem daunting to tackle for beginners
  • Together, we form a community science healthy soils network, represented by  concentric circles
  • We started with a healthy soils field experiment growing a cover crop of fava beans followed by corn, which we used to develop a Community Science Healthy Soils Network with a focus on ways to grow healthy soils in  the face of a changing climate.
  • We partner  with edible gardens at schools, community gardens and other public locations to learn, together, how to grow healthy soil.
  •  Our target audience is communities most severely impacted by an inequitable food system.
